Gouzenko’s defection had far-reaching effects. In Canada, several people were arrested and convicted of espionage while other Western governments were alerted to the extent of Soviet intelligence operations.
Temple’s years in the limelight had made her a target for death threats, kidnapping threats, and extortion threats. As a result she formed a close relationship with J. Edgar Hoover, the director of the FBI, who gave her a tear-gas fountain pen while they watched the inauguration procession from his office window.
By the summer of 1987 it had become public knowledge that the Soviets had bugged the new building with technology that the United States was struggling to disable.
Josef Jakobs was found guilty of espionage by General Court Martial and taken to the miniature firing range at the Tower of London where he was strapped to a wooden Windsor chair and killed by firing squad at 7:12am.
Powers had been sentenced to 10 years’ confinement in the USSR but, amidst concerns that he might reveal any remaining secrets to the Soviet authorities, the U.S. government agreed to exchange Powers and imprisoned student Frederic Pryor in return for Soviet Colonel Rudolf Abel.
The circumstances of Sidney Reilly’s execution and the location of his remains have remained a mystery although it is known he was ensnared in an elaborate counter-espionage deception by the Russians.
Julius and Ethel Rosenberg were sentenced to death in the United States for conspiracy to commit espionage.
The last execution at the Tower of London took place on the 15th August 1941. Josef Jakobs was a German spy who was arrested after he signalled for help after breaking his ankle when he parachuted into Britain.
