US President Ronald Reagan made a speech in front of the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin in which he called on the USSR’s leader, Mikhail Gorbachev, to ‘Tear down this wall!’
One bullet struck Reagan’s press secretary, James Brady, another wounded District of Columbia police officer Thomas Delahanty, and a third struck Secret Service agent Timothy McCarthy as he attempted to shield the president. Nevertheless a fourth bullet ricocheted off the side of the presidential limousine and entered Reagan’s left side under his arm.
The Reykjavík Summit quickly developed into one of the most significant negotiations of the era, with both sides beginning to address the escalating nuclear arms race during the Cold War.
