James was the only son of Mary, Queen of Scots, who was forced to abdicate in favour of her young son a month after she was imprisoned.
Having been held for 19 years in a variety of castles and manor houses around the British Isles, Mary was accused of plotting to kill Elizabeth in 1586.
On the 8th February 1587 Mary Stuart, more commonly known as Mary, Queen of Scots, was executed in the great hall of Fotheringhay Castle in Northamptonshire.
