19th June 1846: First officially recorded baseball game takes place in Hoboken, New Jersey

On 19 June 1846, the Knickerbocker Base Ball Club travelled across the Hudson River to play against the New York Nine at Elysian Fields in Hoboken, New Jersey.

30th July 1916: German agents trigger a major explosion at the Black Tom munitions depot in New Jersey to stop supplies to the Allies

It was later revealed that German agents had infiltrated the site and deliberately ignited the munitions to prevent them from reaching the Allies as part of a broader German campaign of espionage and sabotage on American soil before the U.S. entered the war in 1917.

The first transatlantic yacht race, from Sandy Hook in New Jersey to the Needles off the coast of the Isle of Wight in England, was the result of a drunken wager between three prominent New York businessmen: James Gordon Bennett Jr., Pierre Lorillard, and George Osgood.
