The Louvre museum in Paris opened to the public in the former palace of the French royal family.
On the 12th January 1895, the National Trust was founded by Octavia Hill, Sir Robert Hunter and Hardwicke Rawnsley.
It had taken Congress eight years to agree on how to fulfil James Smithson’s desire to establish and institution ‘for the increase and diffusion of knowledge’.
