The astronauts visited geological features near the Apollo 15 landing site in the Hadley-Apennine region, collected samples, and deployed scientific experiments, while television images transmitted from the rover allowed audiences on Earth to observe the exploration.
As Cernan prepared to climb the ladder of the lunar module at the end of the final moonwalk, he paused to deliver the words, “We leave as we came, and, God willing, as we shall return, with peace and hope for all mankind.”
