By the time of his death in 1861, shortly after the proclamation of the Kingdom of Italy, Cavour’s vision of a unified and constitutional nation had largely been achieved.
The Italian parliament convened in Turin to proclaim the establishment of the Kingdom of Italy under Victor Emmanuel II, previously King of Sardinia, who was declared the first King of Italy.
On the 26th October 1860 Giuseppe Garibaldi met with Victor Emanuel II, the King of Sardinia, at Teano and handed him control of southern Italy.
