The tower’s construction began on 28 January 1887 and took just over two years to complete, after which Gustave Eiffel led a group of government officials and members of the press to the top where he raised the French tricolour flag.
Built to carry the Llangollen Canal across the River Dee, which provided a direct waterway link between the industrial towns of Shropshire and the Welsh coalfields, the Pontcysyllte Aqueduct is one of the most remarkable engineering achievements of the Industrial Revolution.
