The overthrow of Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi brought the 2,500 year old monarchy in Iran to an end and ushered in a theocracy overseen by the Ayatollah Khomeini.
The war persisted for nearly eight long and bloody years, leading to the deaths of an estimated half a million soldiers and the same number of civilians.
On the 11th February 1979 Mohammad Reza Shah Pahlavi, the last Shah of Iran, was overthrown as a result of the Iranian Revolution.
