Clashes between troops and rioters during the Nottingham Cheese Riot led to one man being killed while the mayor himself was knocked down by a rolling cheese wheel.
The royal charter marked one of the earliest recorded examples of legal protection for a specific regional food product in Europe by ensuring that only cheese matured in the caves of Roquefort-sur-Soulzon could bear the name “Roquefort,” preventing producers in other regions from marketing similar cheeses under the same name.
Weighing more than half a ton, the completed cheese was marked with the Jeffersonian motto ‘Rebellion to tyrants is obedience to God’ and was presented to President Jefferson on January 1, 1802.
