The boycott lasted for 381 days and called for African Americans in Montgomery to refrain from using the city’s buses, which were segregated, until fair treatment was guaranteed.
This simple act of defiance led to her quickly becoming a symbol of the Civil Rights Movement, and sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott.
The marchers arrived in Montgomery on 25 March, where King made his ‘How Long, Not Long’ speech to a crowd of more than 25,000 people.
In October 1921 Harding travelled to Alabama. Here he expressed his support for anti-lynching laws that would hold counties responsible for the illegal hangings, and lodge federal murder cases against the participants.
